How appropriate is it to ask for what you want to receive? Some people never think to ask for themselves because they think they are being selfish. They have been told in the past, usually in their formative growing up years, that they should give to others and not focus on themselves and their own needs. But what happens to the person that never asks to receive?
What I have seen in my practice for more than 30 years is that holding that thought as a belief creates a whole set of people that have very low self -esteem. They have been hammered unconsciously and perhaps consciously that to ask for anything is selfish, egotistical and unhealthy. So these individuals grow up never feeling that they DESERVE to ask for anything for themselves. They place everyone else’s needs in front of their own. They focus only on other people’s thoughts and feelings and lay aside their own needs. Essentially they become doormats as they lay down their own needs for the needs of others.
It is critical for souls to ask for what they need! Even the greatest saints asked for what they needed. Mother Teresa was known to ask for patience, compassion and tolerance to work with the masses of people that she knew she needed these strengths for! Did she ask out of selfishness or because she knew these to be important characteristics for her work?
This is an excerpt from a wonderful article I read! St. Peter was one of my favorite saints…even named my son for him!
“Bruce Wilkinson told the story of a man who gets to Heaven and hears from St. Peter about a “box of blessings” that every Saint has. The man found it overflowing with magnificent blessings, about which St. Peter said, “These are all the blessings God would have given you in your earthly life, if only you had asked for them.” Emphasized Wilkinson, “We’re not on an automatic mailing list for God’s blessings. The truth is, we have to ask for them.”
Did this mean they were selfish, or did it mean they knew what was important to them and asked to receive those needs?
Who would we be to judge or critique anyone expressing their needs? It matters not if someone asks for money, clothing, jobs, housing, love, compassion or joy to be placed in their lives. They may turn around and do the most remarkable things with what they receive, or it may be something that only they desire and need at this time.
Yes, ask and you will receive! It is the human path in this lifetime. Until you ask, nobody will know it needs to be given! And don’t you deserve it?
Be on the lookout! My new book, “The Thought That Changed Your Life Forever,” has just been published and as a contributing author in the book, my chapter is “Ask and You Will Receive!” Read more about it here!
