Communication is the No. 1 issue that all couples seek counseling for as well as individuals that need coaching in relationship building. Miscommunication frequently occurs on a daily basis.
What makes the art of communication so difficult? Why are some things tough to put into words and just say your true feelings?
The No. 1 reason that arises over and over again is fear of judgment or criticism. How can you be your authentic self and truly say what is needed to be said if you’re constantly wondering how it will be received? Some question, “Will the other person be offended or even worse than that, will they think worse of you or differently?”
These are some of the thoughts that come up as you consciously or unconsciously choose your words to communicate with your partner, friend, family or even acquaintances. That also becomes part of the problem. A lot of your thoughts are unconscious. Sometimes you don’t even have the awareness to know, “Why did I just say that?” or “Why is my tone so angry under these words?” Once the awareness has become conscious then there can be choice about doing something with the anger that is really underlying your communication. Often, the main emotion under poor communication is ANGER! The other one is insecurity but more about that one later! Let’s deal with one emotion at a time!
I wrote a great article on “One of the Top 5 Emotions That Block Your Journey and Three Steps to Healing,” and guess what? It’s all about ANGER!
