Distractions. Why are they placed in your lives? Is it to alleviate the angst or pain you are perhaps feeling at the time? Is it used as a way for you to feel in control of something else that is more tangible or concrete?
There are many reasons people will distract themselves. First and foremost it does serve as a diversion from whatever is troubling the conscious or unconscious mind. If you can spend your energies focusing on something you can truly fix, feel in control of, or tangibly change for the better, then in some respect the distraction has proved fruitful.
The only problem with distractions is that the problem or issue that you were having trouble with in the first place is still there and may even be larger than it was before. What to do then? Keep distracting yourself with whatever is at hand? Or perhaps you will immediately feel a huge sense of relief if you make the decision to address that which you truly know is bothering you, or is at the top of your mind. How can you do this?
Here are some simple steps to follow:
• Write down the first thing that comes to mind that is troubling to you.
• List solutions underneath it. It may be something you can do personally, resources you might want to find for help, or people who can help you feel better about this issue.
• Establish a timeline for dealing with it. Make it reasonable. Do it with kindness to yourself so you don’t feel boxed in, but design the timeline so that it will be done.
• Work at it a little each day. Find resources. Work on it in pieces until you can see its end for the gentle timeline you set for it.
