Much has been written about gratitude. Oprah Winfrey actually inspired millions of people to write in a gratitude journal on a daily basis. This is a practice that therapists around the world have encouraged clients to do for centuries. But with the Oprah seal of approval, people went out in masses and bought notebooks, journals or specific books to write down what they were grateful for in their lives. How wonderful was that? As Oprah approached each step of her own spiritual journey, much of the world became more enlightened at the same time.
Why is the art of gratitude so important? I speak of it as an art form because to me it is just as important as an artistic rendering that perhaps Leonardo da Vinci painted. It is as significant as the writings of Longfellow and Keats among many. These are works of art that have stood the test of time. Their beauty and form and message have been handed down through the centuries.
What greater gift could you give someone than the gift of gratitude? When you express how grateful you are to someone in your family, a close friend or perhaps to someone doing good work in your community, what is the impact on them?
As clients tell me their initial family history, they share significant remarks that were told to them throughout their lifetime. Guess how many of those remarks were either a compliment, a token of appreciation, or a simple thank you for something they had done for the other person? I wish I could tell you that it was many times! Unfortunately, negative comments where my client felt put down or less than are equally remembered, if not more. Sometimes it’s not the particular words, but it is the FEELING of gratefulness that remains.
Gratitude is an art form. It is one you can express through writing, drawing, speaking, or even physically. Touch is huge! A thank-you hug, a warm embrace, or a touch on the arm clearly sends a message of gratitude.
It’s so simple, and yet so utterly profound. It touches the spiritual cord that connects us soul to soul.
Who will you express gratitude to this day that may change their life forever?
