Why is it that people seek joy throughout their lives? What is the stimulus that draws you to joyful people, joyous times, or even joyful noise? Plain and simple – it is the feelings that are evoked when such joy is felt, heard or experienced.
Once you’ve experienced this joy, it becomes like a magnet pulling you back to what feeds your body, mind and soul.
What exactly does joy do? Physically, the feelings of joy fill your body with endorphins such as the ‘runner’s high’ you hear about. It is the same high that people experience when they have just had some of their finest moments. It’s the hiker that has just reached the peak of Kilimanjaro, or the deep-sea diver that has discovered the century’s-old treasure buried beneath the waters. It is the high of the spelling bee champ that has spelled their final word perfectly. It is thrill in the person that has sat for the very first time in meditation and heard their message.
This is joy. This is what we feel when we have our finest moments. It is unbelievable that we could find this on a daily basis, but it is true. I have felt it! It is received in daily meditation. It is felt as I stroke my dog and see the joy in her eyes. It is in the fine glass of wine shared between my husband and I at the end of a long day! It is felt as I walk arm in arm with my daughter as we spend time together or with my son as we share a wonderful meal he has cooked for me!
Let us keep seeking joy. It is a gift from God that is given over and over and over again!
What is the joy you have felt or seen today?
